In 2019, I had the opportunity to enter the Uniqlo x FIDM design challenge where students utilized deadstock and textile waste to create a new product. I won third place for my Boiler Suit design. Uniqlo x FIDM.

The boiler suit that doesn't make you boil.

Uniqlo x FIDM Design Challenge Concept

  • Simple, but functional

  • Cooling AIRISM lining (not viewable in photo)

  • Corduroy Collar and belt from easy leggings

  • Elastic cut from corduroy easy leggings

* The above components have been recycled from Uniqlo product.

The main fabrication is bamboo lyocell twill. It has a cooling and self-deodorizing effect. I believe that Uniqlo needs to this introduce fabric into their assortment which is why I opted to provide my own fabric. In twill weave form, it is durable and long-lasting. Bamboo lyocell twill not only will elevate Uniqlo’s assortment, but it is a fabrication that is versatile and worth investing in. Not only available in jumpsuits, but it can expand into different product categories such as outerwear, tops, bottoms and dresses.

Uniqlo is Lifewear. It is made for all. They provide quality basics for all people of different ages. I wanted to create a garment that not only solved my number one issue with jumpsuits (they make me perspire during the summer), but appeal to a diverse demographic. I intended to accomplish this with the W’s Utility Jumpsuit.

Problem:

Jumpsuits are an elevated look no matter what season, but they can be uncomfortable to wear in the warmer seasons. Often times, they can worsen perspiration under the sun and the fabric may cling to your skin or stain with moisture.
